The History of The Museum of Science & Industry
In 1962, Hillsborough County approved funding for the Museum of Science and Natural History in Sulphur Springs; it provided educational programs to both children and adults. The name changed to the Hillsborough County Museum in 1967, with construction on a new museum in North Tampa beginning in 1976--MOSI (the Museum of Science & Industry), a 190,000-square-foot science center featuring Florida's only IMAX Dome Theatre, permanent and temporary exhibitions, a planetarium, and public library--was completed in 1995. Further renovations were done in 1996, 2001, and 2005, making MOSI the 5th largest science center in the U.S. However on August 13th 2017 MOSI closed 85% of its building and IMAX theater due to budget cuts. Consequently many exhibits were removed while the remaining exhibits were relocated to what had been the Kids in Charge section of the museum. Learn more about our business Coastal Outdoors!
